Brand Therapist helps college students job hunt in a down economy
David Cohen and Emory’s Hob Nob chapter have partnered efforts to host a free self-branding and networking event on April 23rd for young professionals
Atlanta, GA, April 10, 2009-- David Cohen, CEO of Equation Arts, will be speaking at Emory University’s Hob Nob chapter on April 23rd to help young professionals and college students understand the basics of effective self-branding. Starting at 7pm, Cohen’s presentation will be immediately followed by a self-branding workshop offered by Hob Nob to provide attendees with written feedback on their networking and self-branding styles.
“It surprises many people to learn that over 70% of current hires are found through networking and referrals. As the old adage goes, it’s who you know that matters most,” said Phillip Chen, cofounder of Hob Nob, LLC. In this down economy, young job seekers are competing for the same positions as industry veterans with established networks. “It’s always been tough for those entering the job market to stand out from the crowd,“ continued Chen, “but now it’s tougher--and more important--than ever.”
“College students and young professionals often don’t realize the importance self-branding can play in their job search,” said Cohen.
While traditional self-branding tools such as the resume, cover letter, and interview are almost universally used, an increasing number of 20-30 year olds are learning to distinguish themselves by using the same social media networks they’ve embraced for non-professional connections. “Using tools such as blogs, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, it’s possible to get employers’ attention by presenting a personal brand that clarifies your unique value and defines the niche you serve,” said Cohen. “Simply put: get known for something.”
This event will be held on Emory’s campus in White Hall 101 as the capstone to the Emory Hob Nob chapter’s successful first semester. Hob Nob chapters are student-led, campus-based career groups. Unlike traditional campus-based professional societies, Hob Nob is specifically designed to help its participants find their dream careers. Hob Nob chapter membership is free for anyone—student, alumni, or professional—to participate in.
Join David Cohen and the Emory Hob Nob chapter at 7pm on April 23rd in White Hall 101 at Emory University. RSVP your attendance and see more event info on Facebook at: http://tinyurl.com/hobnobapril2009

Hello, everyone! We're excited for the quickly-approaching spring launch of our first Hob Nob chapter at Emory. To accommodate the flurry of activity that will accompany the launch, we've started a dedicated facebook group for the activities of the Emory chapter; meanwhile, this original page will remain devoted to our overall, non-chapter-specific operations. We think that dividing our online presence along these lines will preempt any potential confusion as we launch new chapters on campuses around Atlanta later this year-- these new chapters will each have their own facebook group. If you're an Emory student, alumnus, or faculty member, we'd love for you to be a member/fan of both-- you can find the new Emory group by searching facebook for "Hob Nob" and selecting the "Hob Nob @ Emory" result from the search bar. It's still pretty new (read: empty), but make yourself a member; one of the advantages of a "group" over a "page" is that you can easily invite your facebook friends to become members if you want to spread the word about Hob Nob! (Please do!) If you're a fan from outside the Emory network, no action is needed on your part... unless you're just super cool and want to encourage your facebook friends to become Hob Nob "fans." (In which case, you can use the "share" icon near the top right of our page to let other people know they should check the page out and become a fan!) Thanks for your continued support-- more exciting stuff is on the way! |
